This is the tiniest constituent of the Indian Union. This archipelago
consists of 12 atolls, and 36 islands of which only 10 are inhabited, Kavaratti
is the headquarter and Bitra – the smallest island has only 225 persons
dwelling on it.
Although the land area is small, the territory assumes great significance
– both strategic and economic, due to the vast area of water commanded by it.
This adds up to 20,000 sq. kms of lagoons and 20,000 sq. kms. of exclusive
economic zones.
The early history of the islands is preserved in the oral traditions of
the tribal population. One legend tells us that Cheraman Perumal, the last King
of Kerala, came here after his conversion to Islam on his way to Mecca. Some of
the ships that came in his wake were wrecked and the survivors settled down
here. Most of the population follows Islam, though sovereignty remained with
Hindu rulers of Kerala. In 1854 the English took over its control.
At present, agriculture is the main state of economy, coconut coir and Jaggery are produced. There is great potential to develop fisheries and tourism. The administration is encouraging handicrafts and small scale industries. There are two boat building yards engaged in mechanized boat making.
