Delhi is a historic city and is referred to by different names in myths, legends and the epics. It has seen the rise and fall of many empires. Its history is entwined with the chronicles of the Mauryas, the Guptas, the Turko Afghan, Sultans, the Mughals and the British.

Delhi is surrounded by Haryana on all sides except to the east where it shares a border with U.P. It had for years been governed as a Union Territory and has received a legislative assembly after a constitutional amendment and the making of the National capital Territory in 1991. It is now a State, with a Chief Minister.

The political capital of the nation is also a thriving commercial hub in Northern India and an important centre for small industries. Footwear, textiles, electronics and soft drinks are the main units.

Due to pressure of rapid industrialization, the area under cultivation is shrinking constantly and the farmers are shifting from food grains to vegetable and fruit crops, dairy and poultry.

Some of the most famous and architecturally significant monuments located here are the Qutub Minar, the Purana Quila, the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid, the Humayun’s Tomb, Jantar Mantar and the India Gate.
