An Exhibition of Water Colour Paintings on " Monuments of India" at MACIC [July 28 – August 31, 2010]

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) is organizing an exhibition of water colour paintings by Indian painter Kashi Nath Das. His Excellency Mr Hossam Nassar, First Under Secretary of State for Foreign Cultural Relations in the Ministry of Culture, Arab Republic of Egypt and Ambassador of India to Egypt Mr R.Swaminathan have inaugurated the exhibition on 28 July, 2010 at the Centre, Cairo.
Kashi Nath Das, born in Kolkata in May 1973, is one of India’s prominent young painters. After spending his early years in Kolkata and winning recognition at the state level for his artistic works, Kashi Nath Das moved to Delhi for his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the College of Arts, University of Delhi (2004) where he won medals and awards for his paintings at the all-India level.
His works grace several institutional collections including those of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the College of Arts, New Delhi, and leading Indian hotels. He has participated in several national and international painting exhibitions.

Visit of Indian Chemical Industry [CAPEXIL] delegation to Egypt

A trade delegation from the Chemicals and Allied Products Export Promotion Council of India (CAPEXIL) led by Mr. S. Sengupta, Deputy Director, CAPEXIL visited Egypt to explore avenues for increase in commercial exchanges between India and Egypt.
The delegation represents 12 Indian companies in the sectors of granite and natural stones, ceramic and sanitary wares as well as non-mineral products such as auto tyres, tubes and related products including auto belts and other rubber and stationary products.
The delegation was holding a Buyer Seller Meet at Ramses Hilton on 27th July, 2010 and another BSM at Alexandria Chamber of Commerce on on 28th July, 2010.

A Panel Discussion on “India-Africa Relations” at the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Cairo

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), in cooperation with Egypt-India Friendship Association (EIFA), organized a panel discussion on “India-Africa Relations” on Wednesday, 26 May 2010 at 6. 30 p.m. at the Centre’s premises.
The panel consisted of H. E. Raphael Malonga, Ambassador of the Republic of Congo and Acting Dean of the African Group of Ambassadors who also presided over the function, Dr Ali El Din Hilal, President, EIFA, who moderated the session, H. E. Ambassador Ahmad Haggag, Secretary General, African Society and H. E. Mr. R. Swaminathan, Ambassador of India to Egypt.
Since times immemorial, India has enjoyed close relations with the countries of Africa. In recent times, these relations have further strengthened and become broad based. A vibrant India and a resurgent Africa are witnessing an intensification of relations and growing convergence of interests in their common quest for sustainable economic growth and development.
This panel discussion, which coincides with the celebration of Africa Day, is a part of a lecture series organised by the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, in collaboration with EIFA which commenced in April 2009

The Embassy of India in Cairo and the Zagazig University are jointly organising an “India Week” from 16 to 19 May 2010 at the premises of Zagazig University.
The event jointly inaugurated on Sunday, 16 May 2010 at 1100 hrs by H. E. Councilor Yehia Abdel Magid, Governor of Sharqiya Governorate; Dr. Maher Al Domiaty, President, Zagazig University and H. E. Mr. R. Swaminathan, Ambassador of India to Egypt.
The week long festival will include a talk on India-Egypt relations by Ambassador R. Swaminathan, a separate interaction session with the students from the Institute of Asian Studies of the University; a photo exhibition titled,
“India-Egypt: A Photographic Retrospective” and display of books on and related to India at the Indian pavilion which will also exhibit a variety of Indian tea and spices. Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture,
the cultural wing of the Embassy, will be organising a yoga demonstration cum workshop on 18 May 2010 and screening of Indian Feature Films with Arabic subtitles daily during the festival.
The programme also includes interaction with the members of the Sharqiya Chamber of Commerce to discuss potential opportunities for promoting bilateral economic and commercial cooperation

Distribution of Prizes for Winners of the “Glimpses of India” Painting Competition at Gomhuria Theatre

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), Embassy of India, Cairo, was pleased to announce that renowned radio artist Abla Fadila and Ambassador of India to Egypt H. E. Mr. R Swaminathan have distributed prizes and certificates to the 95 winners of the 15th annual “Glimpses of India” painting competition at a ceremony that was organized at the Gomhuria Theatre at Abdeen at on May 5, 2010.
Abla Fadila has been working with Cairo Radio for about five decades recounting stories for children. Her voice is recognized all over Egypt and she is a beloved friend and mother figure to millions of Egyptians who have grown up listening to stories read out by her.
To commemorate the birthdays of Mahatma Gandhi, father of the Indian nation, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, independent India’s first Education Minister, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) has been conducting a painting competition for Egyptian children called the “Glimpses of India” painting competition in November every year in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of ARE

A lecture titled “Down Memory Lane – The India I know” at the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Cairo

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), in cooperation with Egypt-India Friendship Association, organized a lecture titled “Down Memory Lane-The India I Know” by Mr. Mursi Saad El-Din, Editor-in-Chief of Egypt Today magazine on Sunday, 18 April 2010 at 6 p.m, at the Centre’s premises.
Both as an eminent journalist and a senior civil servant Dr. Mursi is familiar with India and Indians. His career began as a journalist with the Egyptian Gazette, after which he was appointed as Secretary of the Egyptian Institute in UK for 12 years. In London, he took to reviewing English language titles.
His book reviews used to appear frequently in the local press making him one of the most prolific book reviewers of his time. He was the first cultural attaché to be posted to an Egyptian embassy, the first translator of contemporary English literature into Arabic, the first official spokesman of late President Anwar Sadat, the first director of the Egyptian State Information Service.
He was also founder of the Afro-Asian Pen Club, a prolific author of children's books and a respected columnist of ‘Al-Ahram’. His TV programme ‘Open Forum’ was a trend setter in Egypt. At 85 years, he continues to actively write in the press.

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), Embassy of India, Cairo, announced the 15th “Glimpses of India” annual painting competition for school children for the age groups 6-12 years (Primary), 13-15 years (Preparatory) and 16-18 years (Secondary).
The Centre has invited students from Government, Private and National Institutes schools in Cairo, Giza, Helwan and 6th October City to participate in the competition which has besn held at Al-Orman Public Park at Giza from April 6 to 18, 2010. Around 5000 students are expected to participate

World Hindi Day

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), Embassy of India, Cairo celebrated the Vishwa Hindi Diwas or World Hindi Day on 14 January 2010 at its premises at 23, Talaat Harb Street, Down Town Cairo.
Hindi, the official language of the Republic of India, is spoken by a majority of Indians and is considered the third most widely spoken language in the world. Hindi is spoken not only in India but all over the world wherever people of Indian origin have settled down.
Further, with the increasing popularity of Indian, particularly Hindi films, Hindi has become a familiar language to many non-Indians.
Since 2006, to propagate the use of Hindi abroad, the World Hindi Day is celebrated by Indian Missions the world over
