Singh .. a prominent figure in 2005
Watani, (1-1-2006)
His assuming the premiership in India raises several questions: could a professor of economy successfully lead such a large country as India? Could an Indian citizen of no much celebrity like Singh safely lead a democratic government? Would it be right in a country of more than billion people like India, 80% of whom are Hindus, to be ruled by Manmohan Singh, a Sikh while the Sikhs are less than 1% of the population? And would it be right for A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who belongs to the Muslim minority, to assume presidency and for Sonia Rajiv Gandhi, a Christian, to lead the ruling Congress party?
The Time magazine says if the answer for these questions is “yes”, which seems sufficiently convincing, this is natural for India which embraces a unique diversity. With his distinct humanity, far-sightedness and outstanding experience, the current PM Manmohan Singh is qualified to lead a promising country like India in today’s world.
It is well-known that Singh, 72, was the engineer of the economic reforms in India during the mid 1990s, the reforms which put India among the major powers.
