Mustafa Hussein Distributes Prizes to Winners of the “Glimpses of India” Painting Competition

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), Embassy of India, Cairo, organised the Prize distribution ceremony for the 17th annual “Glimpses of India” painting competition at the Gomhouria Theatre on October 31, 2011. Noted Egyptian cartoonist and painter Mustafa Hussein and Ambassador of India to Egypt R. Swaminathan distributed prizes and certificates to the 80 winners of the competition. This year, around 2200 children in the age groups 6-12 years (Primary), 13-15 years (Preparatory) and 16-18 years (Secondary) including children with special needs from 245 government, private and national institute schools in Cairo and Giza governorates participated in the competition which was held from October 9-19, 2011 at the Orman Botanic Garden.

Unveiling of the bust of Mahatma Gandhi to mark the 5th International Day of Non-Violence

To mark the 5th International Day of Non-Violence, H.E the Egyptian Minister of Culture Dr Emad Abou Ghazi along with H.E the Ambassador of India R. Swaminathan jointly unveiled the bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation and apostle of non-violence, at the Supreme Council for Culture, Cairo on 23 October, 2011. A large number of dignitaries including the former Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Yehia Gamal were present.

Maulana Azad Centre for India Culture organises lecture on Rabindranath Tagore

As part of the on-going celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Embassy of India, Cairo organised a lecture on different aspects of Rabindranath Tagore by two Indian experts on Tagore, Prof. Hossainur Rahman and Prof Anisur Rahman on 3rd October, 2011 at its premises. The renowned Egyptian novelist Mr Gamal El-Ghitani moderated the lecture. The Indian Ambassador to Egypt H.E Mr R. Swaminathan graced the occasion.

Seminar on ‘Tagore and Shawky’ at the Supreme Council for Culture

As part of the on-going celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Embassy of India, Cairo in cooperation with the Foreign Cultural Relations Sector of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture at the Supreme Council for Culture, Opera House Complex organised a seminar on “Comparison of the Poetry of Tagore and Shawky” on the 28th September, 2011. Two leading Indian experts on Tagore – Prof Hossainur Rahman, a cultural historian from Kolkata and Prof Anisur Rahman, a Professor of Literature from the Jamia Millia University, New Delhi participated in the seminar. From the Egyptian side, well known poets Dr Hassan Teleb, Mr Helmi Salem, Mr Farouk Shousha, Mr Mohamed Ibrahim Abou Senna and Dr Mohamed Abdelmottaleb spoke. The seminar was moderated by Mr. Ahmed Abdel Moaty Hegazy, Director of the Beit Al Shar (House of Poetry) and himself a renowned poet. Leading poets, literary critics, writers and academics attended the seminar.

Lecture on “Importance of Water in the Egyptian, Austrian and Indian Cultures”at the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) organised a lecture on “The Beauty and Importance of Water in the Egyptian, Austrian and Indian Cultures”on 26 September at its premises . The keynote speaker was renowned Egyptologist Prof Abdelhalim Nureldin, Dean, Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University who spoke on the role of water in Egyptian culture. Austrian photographer Ms Cornelia Kaufmann spoke on water conservation techniques in Austria and Director of MACIC Suchitra Durai spoke on the importance of rivers in traditional Indian culture. The event was graced by the Ambassador of India, H.E. Mr R Swaminathan.

Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture Organises the Neel-Ganga Exhibition

The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) organised an exhibition of photographs entitled "Neel Ganga: Glimpses of Two Great Rivers” by renowned Austrian photographer, Cornelia Kaufmann. The 41 photographs of the rivers Nile and Ganges, which are on display at the exhibition, were taken by Ms Kaufmann during her extensive travels in India from 1997 to 2004 and in Egypt from 2006 onwards. The exhibition will be open until 5 October from 10 AM to 6 PM except Fridays and Saturdays. H.E Mr Hossam Nassar, First Under Secretary of State for Foreign Cultural Relations, ARE, Austrian Ambassador to Egypt H.E Dr Thomas Nader and Ambassador of India to Egypt Mr R. Swaminathan jointly inaugurated the exhibition.

A Group of Egyptian Journalists visit TCI Sanmar Factory in Port Said

A group of Egyptian Journalists were given a presentation and plant tour of the biggest Indian investment in Egypt - TCI Sanmar in Port Said - which produces Caustic Soda and PVC. With an investment of US$ 1.3 billion, the Indian company will soon commence producing 400,000 tons per year of PVC which will not only substitute Egyptian import and save foreign exchange but will also make Egypt an exporter of PVC. The company presently employs 600 Egyptian employees and these numbers are expected to increase to 1,000 soon.

Hindi Divas was celebrated at the Chancery Lawns on 15 September, 2011. The celebrations included a debate competition, a quiz competition for children and Antakshari and evoked enthusiastic participation from members of the Embassy. Ambassador R. Swaminathan handed over prizes to the winners of the competitions.

ITEC Day Celebrations in Cairo

ITEC day was celebrated at India House in Cairo on 5th September, 2011 with the presence of H.E. Mr. Osama Haikal, Hon’ble Minister of Information and H.E. Dr. Hesham Kandil, Hon’ble Minister of Water Resources & Irrigation apart from senior officials of Egyptiaan Ministries and Departments as well as a large number of ITEC alumni. Following the speeches by dignitaries, two ITEC alumuni also shared their experiences during their training in India. About 300 Egyptian nationals have so far been been trained in various courses organized under the ITEC scheme in India and in 2011, more than 100 Egyptians are expected to benefit from the scheme.

Ambassador R. Swaminathan meets the Minister of Communications & IT of Egypt H.E. Eng. Mohammad Abdel Kader Mohammad Salem

In their meeting, decided to expedite the process of establishment of the Regional University Centre and the Regional Centre for Super Specialty Hospital at Alexandria University as the regional centres for North Africa for e-learning and tele-medicine under the Pan-Africa e-network established by the Government of India as a gift to Africa at an estimated cost of around US$ 120 million. The bilateral e-learning and tele-medicine networks have been operational since 2009. 45 students from Alexandria University are taking full-time Master of Science (IT) course from the Madras University in India. 15 students are attending full-time MBA courses from the Indira Gandhi National Open University. 45 more students will be joining the MBA course at the Amity University in Delhi in September 2011. Also discussed was the SEACom/Tata submarine cable system connecting Asia and Europe.
