Indian Feature Film ‘My Name is Khan’
The Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Embassy of India, Cairo
is pleased to inform that on 10 February, 2010 an Indian film, ‘My Name is
Khan’ will be released in Egyptian cinemas. The film in Hindi and to sub-titled in Arabic will be starring Shahrukh
Khan and Kajol, two of the biggest names in Hindi
cinema. The film, presented by Fox Star Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures,
is directed by the young and talented Karan Johar who has made many successful Hindi films. The music
is composed by the gifted trio Shankar Ehsan Loy.
After a gap of nearly two decades, an Indian
feature film will be screened in Egyptian cinema halls. The decision is an immediate
outcome of the recently organized 33rd Cairo International Film
Festival (CIFF) in which India
was the guest of honour. The festival in which 25
Indian films were screened indicated the popularity which Indian films enjoy in
Egypt.
The Indian film industry is more than a century
old. India
produces more than a thousand films every year, around 300 films are in Hindi
and an equal number in Telugu. Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam, Assamese, Marathi and
Bhojpuri films are also very popular. Important centres of film making are Mumbai (Hindi films made here
are popularly called ‘Bollywood cinema’), Kolkata, Hyderabad
and Chennai. Mainstream Indian cinema is well known for its strong emotional
quotient and its emphasis on music and dance. ‘My Name is Khan’ is expected
to have the all the ingredients which make Bollywood
cinema popular all over the world.
In Cairo it will be screened in Galaxy (Manial), Stars (Heliopolis),
Golden Stars (Heliopolis), Family (Maadi), Cosmos (Emad El Din St.
Down Town), Haram (Giza
-Pyramids Road) and Dreamland (6th of October) and in Alexandria it will be
screened in Cineplex (Green Plaza, Smouha)
