India’s new Ambassador to Egypt presents credentials

India’s new Ambassador to Egypt, Mr. R. Swaminathan, presented his credentials to H.E. Mohammad Hosni Mubarak, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, on the morning of June 23, 2009. Prior to the presentation of credentials to H.E. the President, Ambassador Swaminathan had called on H.E   Ibrahim Khairat, the Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on March 22, 2009 and subsequently on H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, on March 23, 2009. Ambassador Swaminathan arrived in Cairo on March 20.

The Egyptian leaders, during their initial meetings with Ambassador Swaminathan, referred to the close and historical relationship between India and Egypt in various fields, and expressed the hope that these relations could be maintained and strengthened further.

Ambassador Swaminathan was until recently the Chief Passport Officer of the Government of India heading the Consular, Passport and Visa Division of the Ministry of External Affairs. He had been posted in Egypt between 1982 and 1984 when he studied Arabic in the American University in Cairo. Ambassador Swaminathan also served in Indian Missions in Qatar, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and at the IAEA in Vienna in different capacities.
