Panthi Dance

The dancers will peform the Panthi dance, one of the prominent dance forms of the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous tribal groups of the region. The dance is usually performed by the people of Satnami tribe, in memory of their spiritual leader or guru, Guru Ghasidas. It includes a variety of steps and patterns. The dancers are clad in colourful costumes. The dance starts with a slow beat, leading to a crescendo. As the tempo quickens, the dancers perform acrobatics and even form human pyramids. The dance is accompanied by a drum, the mridangam, and cymbals.

Desert Symphony

A ten member group of musicians from the north western state of Rajasthan will play various musical instruments and will render both popular folk songs from north western India (Lok geet) as well as devotional music which is called Sufiana music. The performance will include songs composed by saints following the Sufi and Bhakti traditions of the Indian sub-continent such as Baba Buleshah, Baba Farid, Meera and Kabir.  The name of the group ‘Desert Symphony’ is a reference to India’s Thar Desert which is located in the state of Rajasthan. Western Rajasthan is famous not only for its golden sand dunes but also its melodious folk music which is played by Langas and Manganiar tribes.
