Egyptian-Indian agreement on oil exploration
The Indian Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) signed a concession agreement on oil exploration and exploitation in two Egyptian fields: N Happy and S Diyur. The agreement was signed in Cairo on 9 March 2008 between GSPC and the Egyptian government. Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Sameh Fahmi and GSPC General Manager Mr. M. Y. Farooqui signed the two agreements. The ceremony was attended by Ambassador of India in Cairo A. Gopinathan. Gujarat Chief Minister Mr. Narendra Modi offered congratulations to GSPC on this achievement. The N Happy field is located in the Mediterranean Sea over an area of 4125 square km. There is a strong potential for oil and gas to be found there. GSPC will conduct a three-dimensional seismographic survey on an area of 2500 square km and make diggings in 6 wells during the first 4-year stage of exploration. The land field S Diyur is located in the Egyptian Western Desert over an area of 28000 square km near other recent oil discoveries.
