Ambassador of India: Talking about a competition with China in Africa is ignorance of history
Ambassador of India in Cairo, H. E. Mr. A. Gopinathan stressed that India-Africa Summit, which was held last week in New Delhi has laid down a new architecture for India’s engagement with Africa that is anchored in the fundamental principles of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit. Working together, India and Africa can set an example of fruitful cooperation in the developing world. In his statements to Al Ahram, the Indian Ambassador said that the key sectors of cooperation include capacity-building, skills development, agriculture, industry, food security, water management, education, ICT and energy.
The Indian Ambassador categorically denied what is being said about India's concern over the increasing Chinese presence in Africa. He said, "This thinking emanates from those, who have not been adequately informed of the history of India’s engagement with Africa. As the Prime Minister of India said, "We are not in any race or competition with China or any other country. The desire of India and Africa to work together is not new. Our people have known each other over millennia and these relations were further enhanced during 1950s and 1960s."
As for cooperation between the two sides over international issues in the coming period, the Indian Ambassador indicated that The Delhi Declaration gives a detailed description of the common views of India and Africa on these issues. The critical among them are reform, democratization of international institutions, the fight against terrorism, combating illicit trafficking in small arms and light weapons, non-proliferation of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, combating diseases and eradication of hunger and poverty. For example, both sides have agreed to cooperate closely in working towards the expansion of the UN Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories of membership.
As for India's support for the Palestinian people, the Indian Ambassador confirmed that the Indian solidarity with the Palestinian people was given voice during India's struggle for freedom. Since then, India has been consistent, unwavering and steadfast in her support for the just cause of the Palestinian people. India’s empathy with the Palestinian people has been an integral part of its time-tested foreign policy. Moreover, India helps in training Palestinian cadres in different sectors.
With regard to India's stance towards Iraq, the Indian Ambassador indicated that India believes that the priority now should be to ensure an early return to conditions of security and normalcy for all the people of Iraq. He added that India remains ready to assist in the reconstruction of the country.
