May 8, 2006

TASHKENT -- India and Uzbekistan are joining forces to build liquefied petroleum gas plants in western Uzbekistan.

India's state-run Gas Authority of India Ltd. and Uzbekistan's government-owned Uzbekneftegaz signed a memorandum of cooperation during Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent visit to Uzbekistan.

Under the terms of the memorandum, signed by UNG Chairman Abdusalom Azizov and the Indian ambassador to Uzbekistan on behalf of GAIL, the companies will work together on a range of gas sector projects, including exploration and production, gas processing, production of petrochemicals and training.

The plants to be built by the two companies will have a 100,000 ton per annum capacity, and will produce liquefied petroleum gas for use mostly by the Uzbek domestic market. Investment in each plant will be $50 million to $60 million, and while it is understood that several plants will be built, no exact figure was publicized.
