Textile industry delegation from India visits Egypt

[30 January – 01 February 2008]

    H. E. Mr. Shankersinh Vaghela, Minister of Textiles, Government of India, is visiting Egypt from 30 January to 1 February along with a high-level delegation from the textile industry of India. The objective of the visit is to identify areas of cooperation between the yarn, fabric and garment industries of both countries for mutual benefit and to identify possible investment opportunities for Indian investors.

During its visit, the delegation is expected to call on the Minister for Trade and Industry and the Minister of Investment of Egypt. They will also interact with GAFI, the India-Egypt Joint Business Council and with prominent industrialists and businessmen connected with the textile and garment industry of Egypt.

Both India and Egypt have highly developed textile and garment industries. Egypt imports a large part of the requirement of man made fibres for its textile and garment industries from India. On the other hand, India is the largest importer of Egyptian raw cotton and cotton yarn for its textile and garment industries. The industries of both countries can cooperate in upgradation and modernization. The Indian Institute of Fashion Technology has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation with the Egyptian Businessmen’s Association in textile and fashion technology. Representatives of Egyptian textile industry have been going to India under Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scholarships for training in textile factory operations.

The current visit of the textile delegation from India to Egypt is expected to lead to increased interaction between the textile and garment industries of both countries, greater co-operation in upgradation and modernization of their respective industries, and development of further synergies between them.
